A cratch board is at the bow of a narrowboat. It is triangular shaped with the top of the triangle cut off. It prevents water from gate paddles in locks flooding the hold. There is further woodwork frame behind it which is covered in clothes to give water protection when the side sheets are not fitted, or partially fitted.
